Bundaberg War Memorial

Description:
The memorial comprises a tall red granite column rising from a massive granite and trachyte pedestal and crowned by a marble ionic capital and life-sized statue of an Australian soldier.  The statue stands head bowed, arms reversed and carrying a backpack.  The total height  is 38 feet.  The pedestal bears the cut and gilded names of one local soldier who served in the South Africa (or Boer) War and the 277 who served in WWI.  Commemorative plates for later conflicts have been added to the pedestal.  The monument is surrounded by concrete kerbing.

This memorial has outstanding significance as a major landmark and the third most costly memorial in Queensland. The foundation stone was laid on 15 May 1920 by General Sir William Birdwood.  The memorial was designed by Bundaberg architect, F H Faircloth and the masonry contractors were Anselm Odling & Co of Sydney. The statue was imported from Italy and unveiled in 1921.
