Burnett Heads War Memorial

Location of Burnett Heads War Memorial

Memorial Park
Corner of Zunker and Moss Streets
Burnett Heads QLD 4670

The memorial was originally dedicated on 25 April 1994, and was initially a brown slate cairn with a cross on top, set on a slate tile platform with a plaque at the front (east) side.

Following refurbishment and the addition of a roll of honour (west side of the cairn) with the names of thirty soldiers connected to the area who fought in the First World War, the memorial was re-dedicated 23 July 2016. The cairn’s original plaque remains on the east side of the memorial.

Six more soldiers, discovered since the roll of honour plaque was manufactured, will be added by the positioning of a bronze plaque underneath that naming the 30.

The current memorial consists of a black granite-faced pyramid cairn with a cross on top, with a square base decorated with black mica wall cladding.

There is also an adjacent wall to the south, which is 5000mm x 400mm x 450mm, and decorated with black mica wall cladding, topped with black granite.

The wall has two plaques on its southern face; one on the left with the name ‘Burnett Heads War Memorial’, and one on the right which displays the three service crests.

There are two plaques on top of the wall. The western plaque provides a brief history of the Burnett Heads War Memorial. The eastern plaque records the commemoration service marking the centenary of the Battle of Pozieres.

An additional plaque will join these two in due course and provide information on the Centenary of Anzac project, sponsors and supporters.

There are three flag stations north of the cairn. The cairn, wall and flagpoles are surrounded with decorative bluestone coloured concrete with a margin of exposed aggregate.

A path links the war memorial to the Submariners Memorial, which is located just to the north in the same park.
