Mount Morgan Mafeking Bell
This memorial has outstanding significance: as Queenslands only Mafeking Bell; as an historical record of the Relief of Mafeking, Boer War. The Mafeking Bell (1900) was cast from pennies donated by local school children to commemorate the relief of Mafeking. The gong was made from melted watch cases. Mafeking was held for 218 days by British and Australian troops under the command of Colonel Robert Baden-Powell, before being relieved by troops under Lord Roberts on 17 May 1900. Lord Baden Powell founded the Boy Scout movement in 1907 based on his Mafeking experiences in the Boer War, hence its location outside the Scout Hut.
