Mount Morgan Mafeking Bell

Location of Mount Morgan Mafeking Bell

38km south of Rockhampton, outside Scout Den, Dee Street
Mount Morgan QLD 4714

This memorial has outstanding significance: as Queenslands only Mafeking Bell; as an historical record of the Relief of Mafeking, Boer War. The Mafeking Bell (1900) was cast from pennies donated by local school children to commemorate the relief of Mafeking. The gong was made from melted watch cases. Mafeking was held for 218 days by British and Australian troops under the command of Colonel Robert Baden-Powell, before being relieved by troops under Lord Roberts on 17 May 1900. Lord Baden Powell founded the Boy Scout movement in 1907 based on his Mafeking experiences in the Boer War, hence its location outside the Scout Hut.

Plaque under bell reads: Mafeking Bell. This bell was cast in 1900 from pennies donated by Mount Morgan school children to commemorate The Relief of Mafeking. The defence of Mafeking was under the command of Lord Baden-Powell who later founded the Boy Scout movement. Presented by the Mount Morgan Shire Council. October 1962.
